9Feng Wei Étterem
Offbeat readers know that some of the best Chinese food in Europe is served here in Budapest. When it comes to breakfast, two small eateries stand out in particular: Hong Kong and Feng Wei. The latter serves typical Chinese morning foods such as rice porridge (congee and xifan), deep-fried dough sticks (youtiao), steamed buns (baozi), scallion pancakes (cong you bing), pickled vegetables, and sweetened soy milk, but many Chinese people come here specifically for the sticky rice layered with ground meat and morsels of crunchy fried pork (nuomi fan) and the tofu pudding (dou fu nao).
I was also recommended the rice noodle soup (qing tang mi mian) which I have yet to try. Be there by 8 a.m. for the best selections. Feng Wei is hidden in the first courtyard off Jegenye utca, next to Milky Way restaurant.
To remain unbiased, I visit all places incognito and pay for my own meals and drinks. I rely in large part on readers to support my work. I'm grateful if you make a one-time payment (PayPal, Venmo, Revolut) or subscribe to my weekly newsletter in which I write about Budapest and Vienna.
