6Ecseri Flea Market (Lángos Vendor)
Budapest’s most famous flea market – Ecseri – specializes in antiques. On Saturday mornings, more than a hundred vendors sell Herendi and Zsolnay porcelain, paintings, prints, furniture, embroidery, statuettes, coins, you name it. Kitschy Communist-era stuff and tchotchkes are also to be had. Searching for a wild boar’s taxidermied head? Look near the entrance.
As with other flea markets, Ecseri draws an eclectic cast of characters: many vendors are second or third-generation Roma dealers while customers include art gallery owners, intellectuals, bargain hunters, and people from outside Budapest.
Inside, a food stall serves typical market fare including roasted paprika sausages and notably delicious lángos. Ecseri is reachable in twenty minutes by public transport from the center. Note that the lángos vendor is open only on Saturday. A word to the wise: Ecseri regulars would urge you to show up at the 5 a.m. opening for the best selections.
To remain unbiased, I visit all places incognito and pay for my own meals and drinks. I rely in large part on readers to support my work. I'm grateful if you make a one-time payment (PayPal, Venmo, Revolut) or subscribe to my weekly newsletter in which I write about Budapest and Vienna.
