Why Not Cafe and Bar
Why Not is a gay-friendly bar located on a precious piece of real estate in downtown Budapest, overlooking the Danube River and several Budapest landmarks, including the Liberty Bridge and the historic Gellért Hotel. During the day, the place operates as a regular café, and, apart from the sweeping views from the outdoor tables, it doesn't have much to brag about.
It's in the evenings when Why Not comes into its own. There are various drink specials every night—think €3 for a double shot of Jäger—and fun activities like bingo and karaoke. Tuesday and Friday evenings tend to be the liveliest, when a colorful cast of volunteers, some with an obvious musical background, lift the mood with memorable karaoke performances (from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.). Although open until 5 a.m. every day of the week, try to arrive at a reasonable hour, as many of the gay customers move on to see the midnight show at Alterego, Budapest's iconic gay club.
