A Káve Háza (location; +36 70 930 0950): Caffeine comes especially handy during an event-packed day when one’s energy level can drop after a long winery visit. If you’re after a perfectly made espresso, or almost any kind of coffee, head to the Káve Háza and soon you’ll be revived. Cakes are also served.
Aranykulacs Kisvendéglő (location; +36 74 413 369): Classic Hungarian dishes on a side street near the city center of Szekszárd. The food is reliable — soups are especially good — and the portions are generous. On weekends, you should try to book in advance (weather permitting, go for the atmospheric outdoor terrace). If Italian food is more your speed, try Trattoria da Matteo next door.
Horog Étterem (location; +36 74 407 525): The wine region’s top restaurant for Hungarian food hides by a scenic fishing lake in the village of Szálka, a 15-minute drive from Szekszárd. Horog specializes in classic Hungarian dishes and game meat, often fusing the two as with the excellent venison goulash. Mains are in the €10-15 range. The wine list has many local options.
Hotel Merops (location; [email protected]; +36 74 684 940): This 32-room, four-star boutique hotel smack in the heart of Szekszárd’s downtown offers an all-around comfortable experience complete with modern rooms, a restaurant, jacuzzi and sauna, and a private parking area. The hotel’s name refers to the top wine of Mészáros, one of the largest Szekszárd wineries in charge of the hotel.
Takler Kúria (location; [email protected]; +36 20 429 2430): Takler's striking estate, located just outside of Szekszárd, features a hotel, a restaurant, and the company's wine processing facilities. The rooms are inside a beautifully renovated, chalet-like 19th century building whose porch overlooks the vast expanse of the Hungarian Plain (Alföld)
