Why Not Cafe and Bar
Why Not is a gay-friendly bar located on a precious piece of real estate in downtown Budapest, overlooking the Danube River and several Budapest landmarks, including the Liberty Bridge and the historic Gellért Hotel. During the day, the place operates as a regular café, and, apart from the sweeping views from the outdoor tables, it doesn't have much to brag about. (Unless you find the shiny interior furnishings amusing, which evoke the standard decor of the mid-90s Budapest.)
It's in the evenings when Why Not comes into its own. There are various drink specials every night—think €3 for two shots of Jäger—and fun activities like bingo and karaoke. In fact, Tuesday and Friday evenings tend to be the liveliest, when a colorful cast of volunteers, many ostensibly with a musical background, lift the mood as part of the karaoke (from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.). Although open until 5 a.m. every day of the week, try arriving before midnight, as some people move on as the night progresses to Alterego, the signature gay club of Budapest.
